A Multipurpose Instrument To Measure the Vitreous Properties of Charged Colloidal Solids

We present a new high-precision light-scattering setup to study the properties of colloidal solids. It combines static light scattering, dynamic light scattering, and torsional resonance spectroscopy with a flexible and reliable preparational procedure. All three experiments can be performed quasi-simultaneously on the same mechanically undisturbed sample. Thus, unequivocal identification of glassy behavior in a comprehensive characterization dependent on interaction parameters becomes possible. A detailed description of the mechanics is given. Resonant Rayleigh scattering by confined two-dimensional excitonic states

A systematic study of resonant Rayleigh scattering in semiconductor single quantum wells has been carried out. The dependence of the scattering efficiency on the well width and the temperature has been investigated. The behaviour observed in the resonant Rayleigh spectra can be explained in terms of the confinement of the excitonic states in the plane of the well due to fluctuations in the well width. A microscopic theoretical model for the elastic scattering of light by weakly confined two-dimensional excitonic states has been developed. Revealing Magnetite Nanoparticles Aggregation Dynamics – A SLS and DLS Study

\(\mathrm{Fe}_{3}\mathrm{O}_{4}\) nanoparticles in aqueous suspensions are not stable but aggregate, tremendously changing the rheological properties of the nanofluid. Modified version of both the Static Light Scattering (SLS) setup and of Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) setup experiment were used to monitor \(\mathrm{Fe}_{3}\mathrm{O}_{4}\) nanoparticle aggregation in aqueous diluted suspension. The experiments are described in detail and the variation of the average aggregate diameter in time is presented in this work.

Deposition of the amyloid beta-protein (Abeta) in senile or diffuse plaques is a distinctive feature of Alzheimer's disease. The role of Abeta aggregates in the etiology of the disease is still controversial. The formation of linear aggregates, known as amyloid fibrils, has been proposed as the onset and the cause of pathological deposition. Solution behavior of 4-arm poly(tert-butyl acrylate) star polymers

Abstract This paper reports the synthesis of 4-arm poly( tert -butyl acrylate) stars of different molar masses up to 10 6  g/mol by the “core-first” method using ATRP. PeptoSomes for Vaccination: Combining Antigen and Adjuvant in Polypept(o)ide-Based Polymersomes.

In this work, the first vaccine is reported based on a PeptoSome, which contains a model antigen (SIINFEKL) and adjuvant (CpG). PeptoSomes are polypept(o)ide-based polymersomes built of a block-copolymer with polysarcosine (PSar) as the hydrophilic block (X n = 111) and poly(benzyl-glutamic acid) (PGlu(OBn)) as the hydrophobic one (X n = 46). The polypept(o)ide is obtained with low dispersity index of 1.32 by controlled ring-opening polymerization. Vesicle formation by dual centrifugation technique allows for loading of vesicles up to 40 mol%. Relation between structural and release properties in a polysaccharide gel system.

Abstract The potential utility of κ-carrageenan gels for preparing drug release devices is here shown. Structural properties of κ-carrageenan gels prepared with different salt composition and containing Ketoprofen sodium salt, as model drug, have been evaluated with static light scattering and rheological measurements. These properties have been correlated with release profiles in vitro at pH 5.5. Release properties from gelled matrices have been compared with those obtained by two commercial products containing the same drug. An Improved Empirical Relation to Determine the Particle Number Density of Fluid-Like Ordered Charge-Stabilized Suspensions

Polystyrene as an archetypal charge-stabilized colloid model system was used in this work under well defined preparation conditions. A continuous preparation technique was used to control the suspension parameters salt concentration c and particle number density n. Measurements of n were performed using both conductivity in the completely deionized state and static light scattering. We found a significant deviation between the position of the first maximum of the static structure factor qmax=2π/L and an estimate identifying the relevant length scale L with the average inter-particle distance d¯=n−1/3.
